I am not a tourist, but a Buenos Aires resident. Therefore there are some things which a tourist might be expecting to get (i.e. the accommodating multilingual staff) which I really am not very focused on so I can not comment on that. However, I work downtown and every now and then I try to make a little escape to... more
Overview: This is a really old restaurant that has been serving food and been a prominant gathering place in downtown Buenos Aires for more than 100 years. It is right off of Avenida De Mayo, and has easy access by the subway. Inside the facility is very nicely decorated in architecture of the time it was built. They offer tango... more
So, it took us 4 days of being in Buenos Aires to finally book a Tango 'Show'. The reason is that they offer a lot of shows, but they are all on par with prices you would pay in the West End or on Broadway. We really wanted to do something authentic, and that wouldn't break the budget. Our hotel... more
Unfortunately there are very, very few cafés in Buenos Aires that are that old and so well kept. So if you are visiting Buenos Aires, you have to go there to enjoy the ambience. As you probably read elswhere there is a tango show that I didn´t watch: what attracted me to the Tortoni was it's arquitechture. Have a nice... more
After reading 1,000 Places to see before you die I had to visit the Cafe Tortoni when visiting BA. We had a morning coffee with other tourists gazing at the sumptous 18th century decor - it would have been better in the evening with more people I think but I've been there, done that! more
As we have lived in Brazil since 1964, frequently we have visited Argentina and its capital, Bs. As. The tango show in the small room is much better than as if you go to one of the more commercial places in San Telmo. One can drink wine and have a snack while watching the performance. A visit to Buenos Aires... more
I am horrified at the poor comments about Cafe Tortoni! This is a MUST SEE in Buenos Aires. The food is reasonable considering it is a historic landmark. This is NOT just some cafe to try. This is a BEAUTIFULLY preserved piece of Argentine history. If you are looking for merely a place to eat, then do not go. If... more
We went to the Café Tortoni because a guide book I had recommended it. However, it looked like everyone there had read the same guidebook. We went around 4:00 pm and were seated at the table nearest the door since the whole place was full. The café is beautiful with the high ceilings and woodwork so it was worth seeing.... more
It's a great place to stop in for a cafecito and a churro. At night, we went to a tango show that included some folkloric dances. At $20 pesos cover (you do have to order something but no minimum) you can't beat it. Make reservations though. more
