Our visit to the Underground Railroad (826 N. 2nd St.; [--]) Museum in Memphis was eye opening. I had always thought “underground railroad” was a euphemistic term. (I should have known better after being nearly blinded by the glare of red neon lights in Amsterdam’s Red Light District a few years ago.) Its owner, Jacob Burkle, originally emigrated from Germany,... more

I stumbled on this place because they had a flyer at the Civil Rights Museum. At the time, I was blown away. The guide, Hester, was amazing. She dropped a ton of history on me and,, for example, would even at times bust out in a field song, right from the heart. A multi-media experience! I ended up staying there... more

As I read over the other reviews on this page, I am surprised. My trip to Slave Haven was not anything like the other reviewers state. My tour had nothing to do with the Underground Railroad and very little to do with any of the history of that time period. The tour guide seemed more interested in promoting Black people... more

You really must include this as part of your Memphis itinerary. The museum is awesome! We spent 2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it as it was very thought provoking and inspirational. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. A great gem!! It will not disappoint! One of the highlights of our Deep South fly-drive more

Stirring stories told by a family of local civil rights activists and educators accompanied by African music as you tour a significant stop on the Underground Railroad. Everyone needs to hear and see this important site. more

I have never left a review before, but felt that this museum needed the support. The estate was very eye opening, and the tour guide ( I wish I could remember his name) spoke with such a passion that I could have listened to him for hours. I learned a lot from him and would recommend this stop to anyone!... more

I have toured many old plantation homes and another underground railroad home, but none gave the information packed inside this humble home. It shows how some people were willing to risk their very lives to help people who were oppressed. It also shows an honest view of what slaves went through. My group had members from age 6 to 78,... more

I took my daughter, 17, for a tour. She is a history buff and we are from Denver, CO. The tour is given in a simple, straight-forward presentation. The most benefit is gained when you open your heart and mind and let your emotions and thoughts drift back and join those who passed through this tiny home. Bless all who... more

The first review on this list is ridiculous! The guide explains clearly that the underground means secret and railroad refers to the river just 2 blocks away. It was a very humbling experience and a can't miss if you are wanting to learn some history. more

Erica the tour guide was full of information. She gave a full history about slavery and my jaw dropped as she was telling the stories. It is not America's finest hour but still a part of history and worth visiting regardless. Only open Tues-Sat so plan accordingly. more
