We've stayed here a few times, largely because accommodation in Llangollen is often overbooked and we haven't been able to get in anywhere better. The hotel is outside the town centre but within a comfortable walking distance.
The accommodation in the hotel is split into two, the rooms in the old part (tried once and never ever again) and those in the "new" wing which are OK. We normally stay in a junior suite which is basically a large double (the other doubles in the new wing are quite small). The first time we stayed in the new wing, about 4/5 years ago, we thought the rooms where quite good. However, maintenance is very poor, so walls need repainting, carpets need cleaning/replacing, beds need to be renewed, net curtains are grey with age and have cigarette burns, the hose on our shower needed replacing last time, the threshold bar to the bathroom was damaged the time before. The list is endless.
The breakfasts are not great - I don't even bother to go, but save my appetite for something in town.
The service is also poor - the staff don't acknowledge your presence unless you interrupt their conversation. On our last visit we complained of the smell of smoke in the room and were initially told that there couldn't be smoke as the rooms were checked daily - I felt like I was being called a liar. We were eventually offered a discount which we accepted. I know hoteliers can't always stop guests from smoking, but it was the way the issue was dealt with that was so poor.
