“Not as good as expected....”

Inn at Lathones

3 of 5 stars
Leuchars
Sep 8, 2008

We checked into the Inn at Lathones for dinner, bed and breakfast, in order to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
We have had numerous family and friends (who all come from the local area) recommend the Inn to us in the past (although I now know that the last time any of these went there for a meal was a year ago).
We were both very happy with the room, and the initial service (reception, welcome etc.) was excellent - and we were looking forward to a fantastic dining experience to follow - but found a little something lacking. The staff were very polite, but it was the attention to detail that was missing - great food yes, but in order to make it a great dining experience you need more than just good food - the whole staff should be working as one to provide service - and this just wasn't the case.
We felt that we were rushed through our courses, and swiftly moved on from our table to allow for another cover, even though there were empty tables. During the meal our requests were met with smiles, but little in the way of action, and my one (small) complaint about the food was greeted with a polite smile, but no apology or explanation.
At this price, I expected better. We had a good time, but not a great time, and in my opinion Peter Jukes' restaurant in Cellardyke is leagues ahead of the current Inn at Lathones.

“Golfing break”

Inn at Lathones

3 of 5 stars
Midlands
Aug 31, 2008

We had rooms 17 and 18 which were very comfortable, clean and quiet. Ideal after a day's golf. Excellent selection of tea and coffee in the room, but having to go and ask for milk everytime we wanted a cup was a letdown.
There was decking outside of the room and lovely farmland views, beautiful on a sunny morning.
We ate in the restaurant the first evening after our long journey. The menu was limited, The food was good and well presented but being nouveau cuisine not substantial enough after golf. The breakfast was very good, with plenty of choice.
The wine list was surprising; some really silly prices on the high side, at least a 6 times mark up.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

“Not prepared for our large tour group”

Inn at Lathones

3 of 5 stars
Little Rock, Arkansas
Aug 13, 2008

I dined at Inn at Lathones as part of a very large tour group of golfers. While the food was good, the service was very poor. It was obvious that they were swamped by our group and were not prepared to deal with us. I can understand that if we had simply walked in off the street, but we had booked a private room well in advance. It's not like they didn't know we were coming.

The room we booked had loads of music related memorabilia on the walls. The Inn is apparently quite a stop over for many big name entertainers (Rolling stones for example). There is a performance venue next door to the hotel and restaurant.

Perhaps the patrons in the front of the restaurant received significantly better service than we did.

“The right ideas, not quite there yet”

Inn at Lathones

3 of 5 stars
London, England
Jul 14, 2008

The Inn at Lathones undoubtedly has some lovely old buildings and a nicely old-fashioned feel. That is, in parts. The bar and lounge area are certainly atmospheric, but the rooms, as other reviews have indicated, aren't done up in a similar or even complementary way. The armchairs really do look they came from Ikea.

Given the stated tariff on our room - £180 - I was ultimately rather underwhelmed. Our double bed was far too small (don't think it was even a Queen size). The bathroom was utilitarian and the windows dirty. The shower was a bit dodgy and bath area poorly designed. It's little things that mount up - for example, toilet seats that don't stay up, and a shower screen that you had to push away from the bath to get out, which inevitably meant flooding the bathroom floor.

I met the famous Morag who was lovely and all the other staff all had the right attitude: very cheerful, definitely keen to help. The problem is that there were too few of them and they weren't experienced enough. Breakfast was a battle for one poor chap to get all the (rather good) food out quick enough for everyone to be able to have some (before it finished again). It needed two people serving, not one. The reception staff were nice but a bit clueless. I overheard one poor German tourist asking what he could sightsee in the area only to get the response "sorry, I'm not from here". Two days running, our newspapers failed to make it to our rooms.

I think the Inn is only going to get better on the service front, once they combine their personal friendly style with efficiency to match. As for the rooms, well bigger beds would be a start!

“extremely relaxed atmosphere”

Inn at Lathones

Jun 30, 2008

Picked this hotel for my birthday at end of June, and was extremely delighted with my choice. We found it to be very welcoming and extremely comfortable., though I do have to say we were in the new suites, which may I add had two balconies, one off the lounge and one off the bedroom overlooking rural fife with only the sound of sheep bleeting - so peaceful. If you are looking for the old worldy charm, this is not for you, it was extremely modern, with music memorabilia on all the walls, CD player, lovely jacuzzi tub and a bed to die for, it was so comfortable, could have stayed in it all day. The food in the restaurant was of a very high standard, but all in all, we felt the food and drink a little overpriced, but as it was for a celebration we didn't mind too much. This hotel holds a lot of small musical concerts with something to suit all tastes. The staff were all delightful and friendly and nothing about the place was "stuffy". I would stay again, but don't think I would be prepared to pay restaurant prices too often.
