Stayed at the Esplendor for our first two nights in Buenos Aires, before heading to Iguazu. The location of the hotel is excellent, right next to Calle Florida and the Galerias Pacifico shopping mall. There was some renovation going on in the area, because there was a big container with construction debris right in front of the entrance to the hotel.
This is a hip boutique hotel, with impressively tall ceilings and cool artwork (portrait of Evita made entirely of bread slices etc.). As often happens with boutique hotels, though, form definitely takes precedence over function, as well as service. Upon arrival in the evening, we were shown to a double room, even though I had reserved the room directly with the hotel and had a confirmation for a "matrimonial" bed; since they were full, I could not change to the room requested and received no gesture of apology.
I found the room to be relatively small, but decorated in good taste (other than the odd lamps that look too home-made), but the bathroom area left a lot to be desired. A tiny sink is outside the bathroom, and the water splashes out of the square-shaped basin; the light above the sink is so far up that you can barely see your face in the mirror; the space around the sink is too small to lay out any toiletries. The shower again looks sleek, but has only a partial glass wall, so spilling is common; the faucet was so flimsily fixed into the wall that on my second shower I accidentally unscrewed it, with water flowing all over. And the towels on the first day were extremely worn and should have been taken out of use months ago.
Another inconvenience to be mindful of: I asked for some help to make a reservation for a tango show; the front desk directed me to a phone number for their reservation unit, which turned out is CLOSED on Sunday and has limited ours on other days of the week.
For $200 a night, I did not think this was great value.
