We were originally booked to stay at The Cocker but owing to a 24 flight delay our room had been given away and we had to find alternative accommodation on arriving in the San Telmo area.
We walked into the Gurda and were quoted US$121 for their cheapest room. We accepted as we were desperate to put our luggage down and have a quick shower. The room was very small, with no windows but it had a double bed and a small bathroom with shower. Almost immediately we had trouble with the toilet which my husband (an excellent handyman) found to be missing an important screw from the ball valve mechanism. We reported this to the very friendly receptionist and went out to spend the afternoon in BA. On returning our bags had been moved to another room as they had not been able to fix the toilet.
The next room was slightly larger and had a bath tub. The windowed doors opened onto a small courtyard and so it was not possible to open the windows or blinds and so whilst in the room it was necessary to have the electric lights on all the time as there was no natural light. The bed that night was very comfortable and we slept well. I was told that this room was US$190 but fortunately we had been given a free upgrade.
We left early the next morning (6.00 am) and were very grateful that the staff had left us some juice and a sandwich for our breakfast.
Every member of staff was very friendly, which was a great introduction to BA and Argentina. However, as another review mentioned some of them did not seem to have any local knowledge of rest aurants etc.
The cost of the rooms I felt to be on the high side. Our original choice, the Cocker (just around the corner) was to be US$85 for rooms which have received numerous praise from Tripadvisor reviewers and the press. I feel that $121 for the first room we were shown and $190 for the second very high when you consider neither had windows and both were small. The hotel gave me the impression of being cramped and claustrophobic with poor quality fixture and fittings. The layout meant that it was quite noisy in the rooms and apart from the restaurant and small bar there was no other public area for sitting in.
If the room rates were lower I could have given it a higher star rating but for the money paid I would have liked just a little more space.
