From the minute you are dropped off by the lancha (public boat) on the pier of Lomas de Tzununa, to the second you have to drag yourself away from the spectacular place, you will be -- almost literally-- floating on air. The ten rooms, in twin structures on the side of the hill, 400 steps straight up from Lake Atitlan, each have their own balconies, looking directly out over the lake and the volcanos surrounding it. The hosts, Thierry and Maria, could not be any more gracious, helpful, or likeable -- and the friendly staff of Mayan young people from neighboring towns are adorable, sweet and welcoming. The decor in the rooms is plain and attractive - what makes the place incredible are the materials (wood, stone, glass) used throughout and the drop-dead gorgeous views. Oh, and did I mention the lovely pool? The charming library reading spot? The Alice in Wonderland chess board? The crystal-clear lake that you can jump into from their charming swimming dock? And the great restaurant??
The place is just about impossible to leave.... I hate to promote it because it's one of those secrets you want to keep to yourself, but it really is a one--in-a-million find.
