“enjoyable stay”

Very nice hotel...lovely entrance and reception...only slight drawback is the location....well down South Michigan ave from most points of interest for visitors to the city who chose to walk . There are some bars and restaurants in the nearby " loop " district but it is mostly commercial. Kitty O'Sheas bar / restaurant on site was good value serving a fair selection of meals .Our room had two bathrooms which was unusual but turned out to be quite convenient . I would say the room was starting to show it's age although there was no complaint about cleanliness or comfort. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Chicago, and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Practice Overbooking!! No Customer Service!”

Had confirmed reservations, 2 rooms 3 nights and 1 room 2 nights, all King standard rooms. Arrived Wed evening to find out we had no rooms and none were available. After 2 hours of patient waiting Mgmt found 1 double room which we took and cramed 5 people into with the assurance our rsvd rms would be available between 12-2 next day. Next day, same song, made us give up our rm from night b4 by 12 but no rooms available while we waited 5 hours. Attended Bears game and got call at 6pm that rms were ready. After game, should have had 3 rms(rest of our party arrived in town before game but couldn't get a room either, mgmt only had 2 available, both smoking doubles not king and they couldn't find booking for 3rd room, 2 hours later found a "powder room" no real beds just sofa beds for our 3rd room. family travel with parents and in-laws both sets of parents older than 70 yrs of age. Mgmt only reply was sorry we messed up. Many pilots and flight attendents in line while all this was going on each night and they apparently got rooms, must have been Hilton Honors folks. We spent many hours, about 10 hours total, in lobby waiting to rcv the rooms we had been promised but was never provided anything related to service or truthful information. My son was staying in hotel so we really didn't want to go elsewhere due to conveinence factor. Total lack of communication by all members of onsite mgmt at any time. My entire party was completely civil the first night but I did lose it when the same scenario repeated the next night. No REAL help from anyone related to Hilton just the same fake "sorry" with the blank look at the computer screen. Hilton mgmt actually admitted that this happens all the time due to their standard practice of overbooking. Hilton rotates their mgmt staff so you will never meet the same mgr during your stay. Rooms were so-so, nothing special, the best thing about the hotel was Kitty O'learys bar/resturant onsite. Total worthless customer service!!! I've been traveling nationally for 30 years and never have I been treated as badly as this hotel, ever! Avoid this place, there are many hotels available in the same area at same rate which I guarantee treat their guests like human beings and have equivilent accomodations. We did not ever rcv a King Room and every room we did receive was a smoking room. No monatary reimbursement at all which I will be fighting by other means.

“Such a place, such a location!”

Hilton Chicago

5 of 5 stars
Richmond, VA

Great place, great room, great location. Even though there was a big meeting going on (Rainbow Girls in all their enormous gowns) the only consequence for us was slow elevators. Ballroom is amazing, shops on ground floor a nice throwback. Lake views from upper floors -- we were on 17 I think -- are worth it. Concierge advice about restaurants etc was excellent. Definitly would return.

“pretty good experience with the Hilton Chicago”

Hilton Chicago

4 of 5 stars
Pittsburgh, PA
Aug 12, 2008

We (my college-age daughter and I) just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hilton Chicago. We found the experience very satisfactory. We were given a corner room which was quite spacious and very quiet. The beds were comfortable although the pillows were rather soft for our taste. The hotel is very attractive and clean. It's an old building, and halls and meeting rooms are found in unexpected places, which is a nice change from the cookie-cutter buildings we have now. Everyone on staff was very friendly and helpful-the bell captain even took care of our recycling! We liked the airline check-in kiosk in the lobby too-this was the first time I've seen this.

The bathroom in our room was fine but not generous. The big problem was with the floor of the bathtub, which was extremely slippery. It had those built-in strips that are supposed to provide traction but they were almost worn away, and no mat was provided. Adding to this, the drain was slow, so it was a dangerous situation.

We had two meals in the hotel, one of which was the breakfast buffet. As usual in a hotel of this nature, it was expensive but in this case, the price was very much worth it. There was a huge variety of food, everything from cereal to lox. We also had lunch at Kitty O'Shea's, which was fine but nothing special. Prices were a bit high but not painful. There's also a Starbucks in the lobby during breakfast hours, with a comfortable sitting area adjacent.

The hotel's location is a mixed blessing. It's across from Grant Park, with some shopping and lots of restaurants nearby. You can get to fast-food or a reasonably priced sit down meal within a block in any direction. There's not much in the way of shopping,though-the big stores are about a half hour walk or a ten minute cab ride. It's on the loud side though-Michigan Avenue is the front of the hotel and Wabash is in the back, with the El running all night. I like the train sounds but some might not.

The elevators were slow most of the time. There are 3 banks of them which all operate from separate controls, so people press buttons on all 3 banks, which means that extra elevators are always on call. There must be a more efficient way of dealing with this by now, right?

The most annoying thing about our stay was the outrageous price of internet access. It was something like $12 per day and $40 per week. There is a Caribou Coiffee katty-corner to the hotel and a Panera within 4 blocks, but still. It's about time hotels stopped this infuriating, extortionate practice. I'm happy to have them charge everyone a dollar a day for access. Surely that would be enough to cover the annual costs. Enough already! Can Trip Advisor help with this? Let's start a movement!

“Just So So”

Hilton Chicago

3 of 5 stars
Wyoming, Michigan
Aug 12, 2008

This hotel was somewhat difficult to rate. The rooms were elegant but the carpet and bedspreads seem a bit outdated. The room was clean. The matresses seemed a bit soft and worn. Pillows were very firm and felt new. Our room was rather dark - only two lights. Older TV. The bathrooms were attractive and well maintained. Check in was easy. We had to pay $49 for parking as we were told the only parking available was valet. What are the other options??? The staff was friendly and respectful. Be prepared to be "panhandled" if you walk up Michigan Avenue from this hotel. This seems to be a growing problem in Chicago. We were confronted 4-5 times in a two hour period. I would think this would discourage repeat shoppers. We probably wouldn't stay here again because of the location.
