“Fun- links type course with a couple of challenging holes!”

Old South Golf Links

Sep 13, 2008

This was a fun course. If you keep it straight you won't have too much trouble on most of the holes. There are a couple of holes where you tee off over the marshes and these can be challenging - visually anyway! There is one par 3 that is 140 yards almost entirely over the marsh (red tees) - I was glad to be on the green for that one! The links nature of the course is open and rolling which is a different type of course than I normally play. It was fun, the staff was nice and some of the holes are very scenic. I'd definitely play this one again.

“Myrtle Beach????”

I am always amazed at the high scores routinely given to average courses...makes me wonder what type of courses these people typically play at home to consider every course that they play while on vacation a five-star golf club...anyway...Old South reminded me of about 90% of the courses that you will play in Myrtle Beach. It was tricked up, contrived, didn't flow naturally with the lay of the land and sported about 18 pretty uninteresting greens. The holes that had a severe dogleg requiring exacting shots were terrible. They were impossible for the wife to reach in two reinforcing the fact, along with the forced carries on just about every other hole, that it wasn't woman-friendly. The staff was courteous, the pace of play was just over three and a half hours, course condition was good for January, and the price at $60 wasn't outrageous. Not a must play but will suffice if unable to get a round on one of the island courses. All in all an average experience.

Graet Course, Great Staff. This course is very youth friendly and
great value for the money. Have played this course many times over the last two years while on vacation in HH. As much fun as the resort courses on HH.

Played this course on 9/14/2005.I'm glad I didn't read the April review prior to playing the course.I didn't see any of the problems mentioned by that writer.Obviously, significant changes must have occurred since April. Both the facilities and the couse(especially the course) were in excellent condition. I found the staff to be especially friendly(waived the non-golfer fee for my wife who accompanied me).The course is very "user friendly" and ideal for the mid to high handicapper.I'm a 10 handicap and I thought it was fairly easy to play from the middle tees.I played several courses while in the area and found this one to be probably the best conditioned of all.

“Stay away!”

There was water everywhere, it was cart path only and the course was miserable. The cart paths were in the worst shape I'd ever seen - cracks splits etc.
It looks as if they're having financial problems because there was little maintainance of the building or surroundings being done and the place looks worn.
The practice balls were in such poor shape I returned some to the starter and said I wouldn't use them. The clubhouse was in bad shape. Screens to keep the bugs out on the patio were missing. The general condition of the plant and surrounding was bad. There was litter everyplace. The people working there didn't seem to care. the ball washers' brushes were so worn they didn't touch the ball wahen i tried to wash them. There was no windshield on my cart and it was freezing in the morning.
Someone told me this course was "rated highly". If you have a choice go to Palmetto Dunes or Palmetto Hall. The staff is much better equiped to handle the golf needs of vacationers.
