“Watford Ferry Apartments More Than Met Our Expectations”

Watford Ferry Apartments

Aug 18, 2008

As a 50th Birthday gift to my wife, I rented the Rainbox Runner for 4 days at the end of July just before the East-West Cricket Match was held. The apartments are extremely well located for those who wish to stay in the West End - 100 yards from the Watford Ferry Stop and a very accomodating coffee shop, easy walking distance to downtown Somerset and its restaurants, bus stops in both directions within 150 yards, and approximately 5 miles to the Naval Yard. We found the Owners, especially Kathie, to be gracious and very responsive to our requests. Before our arrival, Kathie arranged transportation to/from the airport at or below the "going rate". The first day we discovered that the coffee maker was broken. My wife is a coffee adict, so we immediately contacted Kathie. That evenning a new "in the box" Coffee Maker was delivered to our apartment. As luck would have it this Coffee Maker also did not work. We notifed Kathie again and the next evenning another new coffee maker was delivered - and this one worked great and had more than enough options on it to satisfy the most demanding. The one down side we observed was the ant population seemed to like the apartment as well. Although we were not too pleased, we did expect this based on the reading the other reviews. For those who do not know, Glass Plus/Windex etc. kill small bugs like ants immediately. As other reviews have indicated, the kitchen was well supplied - including Glass Plus. So without spending a dime or wasting any time, we were able to "attack" the ants. We would definitiely consider staying at these apartments again when we return to Bermuda.

“A Great Place to Stay”

Watford Ferry Apartments

4 of 5 stars
Manchester, New Hampshire
Jul 14, 2008

Ok, so our stay at Yellowfin was good. The apartment was clean and even a little bigger than initially expected. Although, the living room does look a little bigger in the online pictures. The kitchen was good size, more than adequate for what we used it for. There were plenty of utensils, plates, etc. for us.

There is only one AC wall unit in the living room and a ceiling fan, so we actually bought a small fan at the dollar store (for $35) to help circulate the air into the bedroom a little better. We left it there so hopefully others will be able to use it, too. It was money well spent!!

The balcony had a decent view, but like the pictures on-line indicate, there are palm trees in the way. I do think that the Yellowfin unit has the best, perhaps only view of the water, aside from the owners unit. We didn't mind the quick walk to the bridge to see the beautiful and breath taking sunsets! One night, I believe it was on our last night, we even saw a sea turtle from the bridge! It was so magical!!

There is a spot where you can swim from the property, but it's a little dangerous. Very sharp coral so if you decide to venture out and swim off the "dock" I would strongly suggest aqua shoes. I sliced my finger pretty good and another guest cut her foot pretty badly. It is "swim at your own risk." It was a great way to cool off quickly. I think next time we'll skip that part though because while in the water I did see a rat walking on the rocks and some pretty weird, scary looking bugs near the ladder to climb up.

Now onto bugs and such... unfortunately there were a ton of ants. I had read of the prior to our trip so I went out and bought extra traps for the apt. (we kept all of food tightly wrapped and in siplock bags so there were no bugs in our food), the ants don't really seem to go for the traps, so I bought a can of Supa Swat! What great stuff!! This particular bug spray and it's sister can Supa Bug ended up coming in handy, especially on our 3rd or 4th night when we were sitting watching the weather on the tv and just about to take a bite of some delicious chocolate rum cake. My husband spotted a cockroach scurry our from under the couch! YIKES! I wasn't totally surprised being that we are so close to the water in a tropical location, but we don't have bugs like that where we live! This is when the Supa Swat came in handy. It took care of the problem very quickly. We nervously checked under the couch for more visitors and didn't see any. We still don't even know where they came from. That was the last one we saw actually alive. We went around the house and sprayed under everything... in the morning the was another dead one in the kitchen. We saw 4 in all and only the one on the first night was alive. We got into the habit of spraying under everything right when we would return from our day at the beach so we wouldn't have anymore surprises. We also tried to keep all of our luggage zipped up and off the floor if possible.

We were a little "freaked out" by the "palm" bugs as the locals call them, but I won't say I won't stay here again. It was a great deal! I've been to luxury hotels and have seen these types of bugs in the hallways, etc. It happens... having the supa bug was a help though and at $3.66 a can, it was well worth every penny! Next time we stay here we will stock up at the store for sure!

As for the location... this place was very close to the dockyard and was in very easy walking distance to at least two decent restaurants. Gratuity is automatically added into your tab at most restaurnats, so I think that because of this your service can be spotty.

Ok, back to the location... This spot was very quiet, but I think we felt that we would maybe like to stay someplace a little more centrally located in the future. We rented mopeds from Oleander Cycles the day we arrived and had them until the day we left.

The island is very small, but on most days it was quite a haul to go from our place to a beach and back at the end of the day. It would take, with traffic and construction, upwards of an hour to get to most beaches. I would've been nice, especially one that days when we went over to the North Shore or St. George, to not have such a long ride back. You know, being at the beach and relaxing all day long is tiresome! We did manage, though. I was aware that we would be a ways out, and I didn't think it would be a problem when I booked the place. It's just something I will keep in mind when looking into our stay for next year.

The owners are wonderful, wonderful people. They have a dog, two cats, and several bunnies. I thought I was seeing things when on our first night my husband and I were enjoying a couple of cocktails on the balcony and I saw a bunny jump through the fence below! It was pretty cool! We ate at the Freeport Seafood Rest. twice for lunch while we were in Bermuda and their Bermuda Fish Chowder is the best we've ever tasted. I wish I could have some right now as a matter of fact! Their seafood platter was also plenty of food for two people.

All in all this was a very good place to stay. I'm sure sometime in the future we will return. I know this review was a bit long and I'm sure I left out some items, but If anyone has any questions, please don't hesistate to ask.

P.S. I don't have any pictures of the inside because I felt the ones online to be pretty accurate. Also, after the first couple of hours there I didn't want to take pictures with all of our stuff in the way.

“Watford Apartments perfect for an on the go vacation”

Watford Ferry Apartments

Jun 14, 2008

I always forget to write a review once I am home, so here I am on our last night here, hoping to give you a very acurate picture.

First of all, you need to know that Bermuda is GORGEOUS. The beaches on the south shore have interesting rock formations, most have some snorkeling, the softest sand (not really pink, just has tiny pink particles here and there.) The turquiose water is the clearest that we have seen any where. We've traveled quite a bit, and it would be hard to find nicer. You almost feel like you are in a giant clean swimming pool! It is truly breath taking.
The restaurants are pricey but good, the service is far superior to any where we've travelled in the carribean. The people here are very polite and talkative. There is much to see on the island, and we recommend taking the ferry to Hamilton for shopping and dining, and St. George for sight seeing. We LOVED St. George. Don't miss Tobacco Bay if you like to snorkel.

BIG WARNING...many vacationers zip around on mopeds because there are no car rentals for tourists. We heard several horror stories from locals about fatalities. Bermudians drive on the left, and tourists get confused frequently. The roads are very narrow and whindy. It looks fun but it won't be if you crash.

Now, the apartment. My first impression actually was not positive, because it smelled like urine and mold. But I sprayed lysol and let the owner know, and from there on there was little to no smell. The pictures on the website make it look new and it is not. But it is a comfortable, quiet, very private, clean and convenient place to stay and you cannot beat the price. The small balcony has a little view of the water, but right out your door the ocean is all around you. Beaches are a 15 minute or so bus ride away, which you can catch right beyond the building. Also to the right of the apartments is the ferry. They have a little restaurant on site and the coffee is wonderful in the morning, just steps away from your door and you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view.
The apartment has an adequate kitchen. We didn't use it because we were on the go most of the time. If you stay in a hotel you don't have the option to cook or not to cook!
My husband and I loved coming home in the evening and relaxing in the living room. The bed was okay. You will need to block the windows upstairs if you don't want to wake up with the sun.
You have to decide what you want out of a vacation before you go. Do you want to walk out of a hotel and land in the sand with a tropical drink in hand? Then this is not for you. However, it you are adventurous, private, and want a clean comfy bargain in a good spot, this is a perfect choice.

We loved the location...a bus stop right there to take you to the ferries at Dockyard or anywhere else in the other direction. We actually walked to Dockyard one day. The bus and ferry system along with Mini-cabs and taxis make this island very easy to navigate since they don't allow car rentals. We really enjoyed talking with locals and taking some of their suggestions.
I'm surprised the other reviews mentioned the owners. Neither of them ever bothered to meet us, not even to receive our final payment...even though we stayed in the one-bedroom Yellowfin with the entrance directly opposite their apartment door. Strange. The apartment was OK, only, with the kitchen being the worst. We've rented 4 accomodations such as this in the last year in a variety of locations, and this one had the worst kitchen...rusty appliances...minimal supplies...only 2 cups, 3 plates...don't invite anyone over for breakfast! Our stay began on a downer when we discoved tons of ants in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom loft. Owners response was that they come out in the rain. We live in southwest Florida...don't tell us about ants! We sprayed the floors and put the infested throw rugs in plastic bags and left them outside. We cleaned up the mess of dead ants ourselves and kept vigilant for the rest of our stay. Since we were here in early April, air conditioning was not an issue for us. We did try the wall-mounted unit...don't see how it will cool the sleeping loft in the heat of summer. The laundry area is in a really gross shed type structure.
We loved our return to Bermuda...after 35 years! We recommend this area of the island, but would not send anyone to this accomodation. Apparently, there are others in the area.

we tend to leave people on their own. , thinking perhaps they would like some time to themselves as we do when we vacation.i called them upon arrival to welcome them to the island, asked them if they needed anything, supplied necessary phone #'s, bus and ferry tickets, a complimentary bottle of wine, coins for the washer and dryer and an e-mail supplying final payment options due upon departure. they were a party of 2, so feel plates were sufficient. when asked if you needed anything, why didn't you say so then?

Stayed in the two bedroom, Barracuda. Lots of room and spotlessly clean. Kitchen is well equipped. Views of the water.Patio area with chairs. Very nice owners.
Bus and ferry about two minutes. Short level walk to Salt Rock Grill and Country Squire restaurants, pharmacy, post office and a few shops. Ideal for those who do not want to rent mopeds or climb hills. We can also recommend the Freeport and the Frog and Onion restaurants at the Dockyard.
