We just returned home after a month-long holiday, mainly in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. We are experienced world-wide travelers, prefer to stay in B & B's and never have we been treated as badly as we were at the Beachside B & B, located in Kelligrews, Newfoundland. It was so bad, we did not actually stay....we left!
The "innkeepers greeted" us with blank stares as if to say, "Who are you" and in sloppy clothing....the husband was bare-chested and in a dirty bathing suit. We were ordered to go to the side door, led down a narrow dark hallway, through a room filled with dirty clothing sorted on the floor and computer bits stacked on a table and down the stairs to the basement! The room we were shown was not the one we had picked out....it was the size of a queen-size bed with a television hanging from the ceiling and the so-called "private" bath was located across the hall. There was a disgusting smell which permeated the entire house and the main drain pipe for the house was located behind the wall beside the head of the bed. The view from our room which was advertised as "a stunning view of Conception Bay" was in reality that of the underside of their outside deck. The attitude of the innskeepers was as if we were intruders in their home and we were meet with nothing but ignorance of our presence. When my husband complained and informed them that we would not be staying the 2 days we had reserved, he was meet with disdain and was told we were to give a 7-day cancellation notice ( the website does not mention this policy). We waited for more than an hour for them to give us some type of an answer as to whether we were going to be charged for 2 nights or some type of resolution to this problem. Finally we were told, "If you don't like the room, just leave now.". They delayed giving us this ultimatum and it was well into the evening hours, but we left immediately and luckily found accommodations at the Comfort Inn located at the airport in St. John's (outstanding hotel and wonderful treatment).
This establishment was rated as a four-and-a-half star accommodation in the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism booklet and their website is outstanding. I guess this is a perfect example as to how easily someone can be deceived. I urge all who may be thinking of staying at the Beachside B & B in Newfoundland, think again.....unless you like to sleep in a room the size of a dog-pen located in the basement.
