What can I say about our experience with Hike Maui?
It was absolutely great!
First, let me just say that we did something big every day that we were in Maui, from snorkeling to a helicopter tour. So I have several things to compare our hike to other than lounging by the pool or chilling on our balcony.
Our hike was the highlight of our vacation.
The hike wasn't extremely intense, but it had its more challenging parts, like the banyan tree roots that we climbed down to a gorgeous waterfall and pool. If you’re into more extreme hiking or would rather a leisurely stroll through the forest, I’m sure Hike Maui can accommodate you. Our hike was a good mix.
Swimming was optional, however, I soon found myself jumping off big rocks into a pool of clear water. But not before we got some great photos playing in a waterfall!
I highly suggest you experience all you can while you’re on the hike. I know I would have regretted it if I hadn’t.
My wife and I really enjoy hiking and we do it in our hometown whenever possible. But nothing really compares to hiking in Maui. It’s like nothing I've ever seen!
So, what could make a hike in Maui even better? A great guide!
We got that in our Hike Maui guide, Alex. He was great! He made the whole experience even more fun.
Alex went above and beyond in every aspect.
We didn’t get the feeling that Alex did this every day…in a GOOD way. He treated us as if we were his friends and this was the first time he was able to delight in showing us this beautiful land. This really meant a lot to us.
Not only did he lead us and give us a great overview of the local terrain, plants, and history, but he also was a great photographer. More than once he had everyone’s cameras strung out along his arm to get all the photos we could want. My wife is an avid scrapbooker, as were all the ladies in our group, so this was very much appreciated. It’s often hard, as a couple on vacation, to get photos with both of you in them. Not a problem with Alex on the job!
Alex also showed us several edible plants, berries, and nuts along the way. We had a lot of fun watching each other grimace at the tart treats that we tasted.
At the end of the day, I decided I was man enough to run with Alex back to the van to drive it down to pick up the others. It was a mile or so, I’d guess, and straight up hill. Wow. Well, once I found I was NOT quite man enough to run the whole way, Alex was still nice enough to tolerate my heavy heels and not leave me with a face-full of dust. Thanks, Alex!
Hike Maui really has something with Alex. I hope all their guides are this good! In fact, he impressed me so much, I was inspired to draw a caricature of him after I got back home! (See the included image)
I did cross paths with Kahi (another Hike Maui guide) along the way and he seemed like a fun guy too!
I would definitely suggest Hike Maui and Alex to anyone wanting to see more of Maui than you can see from your hotel. The only thing that could have made the hike better was if it had been longer! If I’m ever in Maui again, Hike Maui is on the top of the list!
