We visited Hio'olo House for our honeymoon and did have high expectations. Upon arrival we were impressed with the overall look of the property, well kept and nice balinese themed building and gardens. The host greeted us and was quite friendly to begin with. I choose the accommodation based on the website and thought it was separate private cottages, in fact it was suites ajoined to a main communal lounge/
dining area. Our room looked grand as we entered the double doors and inside the decor is very nice, but the suite was smaller than I was expecting. There is a small pool which is nice and the gardens are very lovely. My main critism of this place was that the host was too intrusive, we just wanted to keep to ourselves, but we almost felt that we were expected to socially interact. I also felt that due to our lack of interaction the hosts were concerned that we might not be trustworthy. It was also made clear that all guests should respect each other's privacy yet we didn't feel ours was respected. I think the issue is more about the set out of the building than the guests. All guests generally enter through the front doors and if they were to be loud or come and go late at night, it could disturb other guests. This effected our experience and although we have lovely photos we don't have the best memories of this part of our trip. This place is beautiful and does capture the feeling of Bali and the breakfast they serve is good. The location of the place is great although it is rather windy at some times of year in that area. There is ample parking and the veiws are truly spectacular. Another couple may have a different experience, we read the visitors book in our room and some people commented on how much they liked the hosts so I'm a little bemused.

We really do appreciate our guests posting reviews – but this one leaves us a little surprised and even a little confused. We believe our website is very clear that we have a 6-room B&B…not individual cottages. It’s unfortunate that this guest was somehow confused about our accommodations. We have reread our site and find that we use the words ‘room’ and ‘suite’ interchangeably, but we honestly don’t think we lead people to believe we are offering cottages.

We are very sorry that this guest found us intrusive. We must say this is the first we’ve ever heard that complaint. If anything, we tend to lean the other way, leaving guests to enjoy the peace and quiet. We realize that most of our guests are celebrating romantic holidays…weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, etc. The last thing we want to be is intrusive.

We can absolutely say that we do not find guests untrustworthy. Our office and kitchen are closed to guests. These doors are marked ‘Private’ and are locked at night and if we head off-property during the day. This is not a matter of distrusting one guest…it’s a matter of keeping certain aspects of our business closed to all guests. We’re not sure how this particular guest was made to feel untrustworthy, but we do apologize if it was something we said or did beyond the above.

While we were confused regarding the untrustworthy comment, we are also having trouble matching our records of October 2007 with the description of this guest and stay. We’re certainly not claiming that this person did not stay with us, but we would appreciate this guest emailing us directly so we can address any unsatisfactory bits of their stay.

Mahalo,
Amy & Dan

“Beautiful, relaxing place”

We just returned from our stay at Ho'oilo House, May 13th-16th. We stayed in the Kipuka suite. It was really nice, the decor is amazing. The whole place is really beautiful with great attention to detail. We were amazed by all the wood work and the open air setting. There were Koi ponds and flowers/plants all though out the property. Breakfast every morning was nice with fresh fruit, muffins, and a few other things. One morning, we came out for breakfast and there was hardly any food left. It seems like there could be a little more. The pool area was nice with fountains and plenty of chairs. The view was amazing, you have the mountain view in the front of the property and the ocean view in the back. The Kipuka suite was really nice, plenty of space with a comfortable bed and outdoor shower which was awesome. There is also a nice bathtub too. The lanai didn't have much of a view, but was still nice with plenty of flowers and plants surrounding it. They also have hawaiian music playing in the room all day with your own volume controls which was cool. We saw some bugs and geckos around the property which didn't bother us, the property is in the mountains so we kinda expected it. One morning, my husband saw a huge centipede-looking thing in the outdoor shower which was kinda scary. Got a pic of it though! I had a massage on our lanai that I booked through the property. It was awesome!! Ask for Jody, she's really cool and does a great job! Dan was really nice and made us feel comfortable although we never saw or talked to Amy. We liked having our privacy, but when we were checking out, we had to give the key to the cleaning lady because no one was at the property at that time. Just thought that was odd. All in all, we liked staying here and would come back. It was the perfect end to a great vacation.

We stayed at Ho'oilo house for 1 week from the 12th March this year before going to Oahu. We were getting married at Makena Beach on the 3rd day so wanted a quiet and romatic spot to stay . Ho'oilo House lived up to this and then some. Dan was very welcoming and helpful. Some people have mentioned that there seemed to be no one around, whenever we needed some thing dan was available but he also understands that the people that stay here are looking for privacy and romance and does not intrude. If people are looking for a front desk and room service then they should stay in a resort. We found the rooms to be clean and airy. We stayed in the kohola suite which had a great view from the lanai and had no problem with bugs in the room. The property is cooled by the winds from the beautiful mountains behind so is not too hot. It was very quiet both at night and during the day just the perfect vibe for a romantic stay or honeymoon it feels as though you are in a private rented house rather than a B&B. the breakfast was simple but good and coffee was available throughout the day. I hope they do not change a thing as it was the perfect start to a perfect honeymoon. Oh and stay away from burger in paradise very average and they just try to sell you branded cups etc there are fantastic places to eat such as the Mai Tai lounge or pacific o.

“Just what we were looking for!”

Ho'oilo House

4 of 5 stars

We stayed at Ho'oilo house during spring break and had our wedding and honeymoon on the property. We were looking for a place of quiet away from the typical tourist hotels and resorts full of kids. We found this little hideaway tucked into the west Maui mountains near Lahaina. We stayed in Nalu in the back of the property, but felt it had one of the best views of the ocean that greeted us each morning. Some have noted some discomfort in having the outdoor shower so near the pool and main house, but with so few people at the B & B we didn't find this a problem at all. We had very little problem finding the place, and called when we were leaving the airport to alert Dan that we were coming. We enjoyed many a time while we were there just sitting on outside our room feeling the trade winds go by, or looking at the stars. Yes, there are bugs, but welcome to nature, we didn't find them excessive. We did find ourselves asking each other for privacy to use the bathroom, but you get used to it in time. Breakfast is continental and simple. Dan was kind enough to have something in the fridge for us on a day we were leaving particularly early. We did go to Lahaina from time to time to eat there for something more hearty, but the breakfast was good. The property is beautiful, and we felt what you paid for was the privacy, and a sense of getting away from all the hubbub of touristy Lahaina. We would recommend this place to anyone looking for some alone time.

Recommendations: Make the drive to the Tdeschi winery located on Heleakela, it's worth the drive. Cheeseburger in Paradise has some of the best salads, very unexpected. Pacific Whale Watch was a highlight of the trip. The Iao Valley is not too far away, and an easy walk once you are there.

“Beautiful Rooms, but lots of bugs”

Ho'oilo House

Mar 17, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

Ho'oilo house is a lovely b&b located in the West Maui mountains. You drive up through a private road, and you are in a RESIDENTIAL community-funny, no one ever mentioned this before in any of the reviews.

We got lost while driving, so called Amy and Dan, but got Hal -Amy's uncle instead. Amy and Dan were quite busy as they just had a baby -however Dan was around but certainly did not go out of his way to introduce himself. Hal was very gracious as a host.

When my husband and I arrived we were amazed at the front of the house, the spacious open air living room, decorations and VIEW. This is THE best view I have ever seen.

We stayed five nights in the Kipuka room. The room was amazing, a gorgeous bed, tub and outdoor shower. The bathroom (toilet) had a sliding door, which was a cool idea, except the door did not close all the way! There is an adjuster in your room where you can listen to some hawaiian music if you would like. Hal gave us 2 souvenier Ho'oilo House water bottles that you are encouraged to fill up with water from the cooler. And a key..when was the last time you stayed anywhere where you needed a key? The door to our room was amazing, though-difficult to open and close at times.

We had a spacious lanai, but there really were no views from it. The chairs on the lanai were covered with bird droppings, and the floor was not cleaned the entire time we were there. Same went for the floor of the room-it was not cleaned ONCE.

The breakfast was very nice, though I cannot believe they only served coffee until 10am. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit, even bananas from their own tree, coffee, tea, orange and guava juice, hard boiled eggs, cereal, oatmeal and a different variety of home made muffins that were all delicious. But it does not seem as if they put out enough breakfast for everyone.

The pool was great, and since there are only about 4? other couples max here, we often times had the whole pool to ourselves, there were nice large beach towels in our room for us to use as well.

The living room was stocked with books about Maui and the other Hawaiian islands, and really came in handy. There is also a computer with internet access which makes changing plans easy, and we even got to borrow a driving cd for our "road to Hana" drive. They even have a vhs (yes no dvds!) list of movies you can borrow to watch in your room. They also have a fridge outside your room with sodas in it. However, they did not refill the sodas on a regular basis. Hal, however was so nice that he packed us a "take along" breakfast one morning since we were leaving before breakfast was served.

One major turn off about this place was the BUGS. I mean sure, the living room and lanai are out in the open, but I am from New York! C'mon now- there were geckos iin the shower with me, and each night when we returned to our room from our activities, we would find ugly black bugs, spiders and my husband even found a flea on the bed. *there were not bed bugs, but the bugs from the floor would get into the bed-gross! We did see exterminators on property, but perhaps they need to cover up some holes so they cant come in.

Not to mention that after 10pm is "quiet time" ..which is fine except for the fact that when you drive back, it is pitch black where the parking is, and the lights are off in the living room.

Dan mentioned there was security there, though I did not see any.

There were also some things in the room that needed upgrades/replacements, the curtain holders were broken, and the lanai chairs look old and dirty.

Also they say "no kids" but when you come out for breakfast in the morning someones kid is there!

The location of Ho'oilo house is perfect, just about a 5 minute drive from Lahaina and Ka'anapali resorts and beach. Lahaina has all the shopping and restaurants, not to mention the historic sites. Also, even though it is a bit creepy coming back there at night, I looked up into the sky and have never seen so many stars clustered together in my life...it was amazing.

Another thing I found disturbing is my husband and I were in the pool one day, and a couple came to check in yet Amy Dan or Hal were no where to be found! Shouldn't someone be available all day?

I just think for the price Ho'oilo house charges, I expected everything to be top of the line. Things were broken and dirty, there should at least be a flat screen tv, there were bugs everywhere and when we mentioned we were there for our honeymoon they did not even bat an eyelash. Every other place we stayed in Hawaii gave us at least a bottle of champagne.

Overall, a great place to stay if you dont mind bugs and not having the amenities of a large hotel. I would stay again, though not for the length of my trip.
***********************************************************************
Some tourist advice:

Drive or walk along front street, there is shopping food and even places you are used to like bubba gump, hard rock, etc.

Burger in Paradise, great burgers, good prices

Lahaina grill..not so great

Pacific Whale Foundations whale watching tours are good

Road to Hana is a crazy drive, but a little disappointing if you have ever been to Big Island (lots of the same stuff)

Reef Dancer underwater sub tour is horrible and should be avoided

ABC stores best place to get souveniers

Maui Tacos a great place for burritos and tacos, lots of choices of salsa too.

Iao needle and valley is beautiful, not too far away.

Sugar cane train is a big rip off, the steam engine train itself is cool, but it literally takes you no where-nothing to do with sugar canes!

Go to Haleakala Crater if you have not been to Kiluea volcano in the Big Island.

Wo Hing museum is a rip off too-the whole thing is about the size of a bathroom.

Whalers village has a free little museum with an actual whale skeleton outside, not to mention upscale shopping.

Did not go to-but the luau at the Hilton looks nice.

You have to see the Banyan tree-it is the largest in the US.
