One of the most beautiful places in the world. There are vista points on both ends of the bridge. Just one thing - don't go there at night - there is nothing to see then as the bridge is not lit up at night (only the Bay Bridge is lit up).

I can't believe someone said "it's just a bridge...". Obviously, this person didn't take the time to walk the bridge and take in the salty sea air and breathe that which is the Bay area! The Golden Gate Bridge spans two of the most beautiful areas in the world...the city of San Francisco and the Sausalito-Marin Headlands and a nicer connection between two glorious areas has never existed! I have walked the bridge many times and each time is as exciting as the last!
In one word "stunning". We did the city tour which drove us over it. Although when we were there 26.12.05 the weather was dreadful and the biggest part of the time the bridge was covered in cloud but it was wonderful when you got clear views and of course it is good to see in real life what you mostly see in films. A worthwhile stop over on our way to Australia.
My family visited SF in August last year and just had to visit the most famous bridge in the world (possibly). We made the most of our visit and not only made the touristy cycle ride from Fishermans Wharf to Sausalito and return on the ferry but also drove out to Muir Woods. This allowed us to cross the bridge 3 times. It may be old and there may be more modern bridges but we felt there was something about the bridge that makes it an icon recognised worldwide. We didn't have the clear blue skies others have experienced but somehow the mist and fog sitting over the top made it somewhat more unusual for us. As English tourists we thoroughly enjoyed visiting it and have made sure if any of our friends visit SF they go over the bridge.
A must see! Absolutely beautiful!
