Stayed here for 3 nights from May 22nd and it was fab from the start. We booked a double room and while it was small it was comfortable and spotless. We had a room at the back so we had less noise but more sleep and because it backed almost directly to the next building it did lack natural light and a view however it did not bother us because we didnt plan to spend all day looking out of our hotel window!! Staff were extremley friendly and helpful and the famous nightly sherry was great!! One downside is if youve got a few heavy suitcases the stairs up to the rooms could be a problem.
Location for the hotel was the best. Smack bang in the middle of north beach with plenty of bars and restaurants close by and even though it was hilly both union square and fishermans wharf can be reached easily on foot. (Fishermans Wharf is a 10-15 minute walk). Around the hotel are numerous bars and restaurants and small cafes. Ones worth a visit; Tosca and Vesuvio both bars (5 minute walk towards union square) Marios bohemian cigar store is great for snacks and a drink opposite washington square (5 minutes towards fishermans wharf) and for a meal Trattoria Contadina, an italian, and Manga Rosa a steakhouse literally just around the corner are both great.
One final tip is if your up to it hire a bike and ride across the Golden Gate bridge over to Sausolito. About a 10 mile ride on paths. We did a guided tour with Blazing Saddles and it was an experience we will never forget!! Dont worry about cycling back because you take the ferry!
