Marriott's Custom House

5 of 5 stars
Winter Park, Fl
Jun 30, 2008

This is an excellent time share property. The room we stayed in on the second floor was refreshingly different. It was a loft suite with the original custom house marble and plaster appointments along with a modern half kitchen. Unlike other reviews, we did not find the furniture to be excessively worn or dated. The 26th floor observation floor was a great feature. The gym on the 25th floor was well equipped and if you feel like a swim you can use the pool at the Long Wharf just across the street. The location is excellent as it is a short walk to Quincy Market and the North End and the Aquarium T stop is right outside the front door. The walk downtown (The Common and Public Garden) is only about 15 minutes. For breakfast try Anthony's Deli about two blocks away across from Columbus Park. And for lunch pick up something at the Golden Goose market in the same direction.

“Great property, but not much sleep”

Marriott's Custom House

4 of 5 stars
Auburn, CA
Jun 29, 2008

We stayed for 2 nights while in Boston for the weekend. The rooms are nicely furnished and the views over the harbor are amazing - if you bend over the couch you can see pretty sail boats go by. Wow! There's lots of space, not much of a kitchen but there's so many places to eat nearby. We highly recommend the falafel in Quincy market, the flavor of which you can savor for hours afterwards. You can also spend $80 on 5 minutes worth of oysters, worth every penny. The food at the Custom House is to die for, they have hard boiled eggs and waffles, which is a good because it's impossible to find a breakfast place nearby. The concierge said the nearest good breakfast restaurant was in New York City. I found that hard to believe, I think maybe she was new to concierging.

The best part of our stay was the late night entertainment. From the room you can see real drunkards in the streets below, fist fights, people falling over, girls yelling at each other, and actual arrests made by real live policement in big vans. Since I live in the country, this was better than TV, and I was kept up until 3 am by the sirens and the intense action. There is no extra charge for the entertainment. The 6am foghorn is an added bonus if you're an early riser. If it's not foggy you might need to book a wake up call.

The view from the top of the building is fantastic, well worth the long elevator journey. But then elevators are a passion of mine so having to take 2 different ones to get to the top gave twice the opportunity for fun. Oh yeah!

I would stay here again but I'd bring ear plugs if I wanted to sleep. Lucky I didn't want to sleep this time.

Spent a week here on a timeshare exchange and have stayed at other Marriott 'resorts' so I know what to expect. The old building is nice to look at; a distinctive hallmark in financial district of Boston and a great location overall from which to walk all over town. Central location both good and bad as what's near in addition to the Harbor, Aquarium, and shopping are noisy, obese tourists, and hordes of buffoonish locals, typically seen either smoking and/or eating, many in various stages of inebriation, (much WORSE at night), wearing Celtics/Red Sox apparel, with shaved heads and multiple tattoos. Local males are just as offensive in appearance.

The rooms at the Customs House are large but with typically cheap Marriott furnishings and amenities. For example, there are no glasses in the bathroom and the shampoo/soap are decidedly downscale. Gym on 25th floor is adequate and that term just about describes the entire experience. Activities at the property are typically outsourced and do not expect to get anything useful without paying for it, e.g., no free Internet access, overpriced continental breakfast offerings, exorbitant valet parking charges, only McPaper for morning reading, and limited housekeeping service. You can, however, watch old movies and free TV in a 'special' lounge.

Staff very helpful and amiable overall. Were I not able to trade for this space I would never pay what room costs at retail, upwards of 400.00 per night. For those planning to visit and stay in Boston there are probably many more comfortable hotels (Hilton Financial District is one I would recommend) but the downside is that you'll still be in Boston. Go Yankees!!!

“A great visit”

We had a fabulous time in Boston for 3 days! The Custom House was a very interesting place to stay. The rooms were beautiful and very large. It was great to have a little kitchen area as we had 2 kids with us. I would stay there again anytime. However, I was a little befuddled why it was rated so highly for children. There is no pool, the game room is a bit lame, and there is no room service or restaurant. The nightlife outside our windows was extremely loud, very late into the night. Our children are not small, so it wasn't too much of an issue for us personally but I found it strange that it is the number 1 rated hotel for children. The elevators were challenging sometimes and if you were staying on the higher rooms or wanted to use the game room, or observation deck you have to change elevators, which were extremely slow. Overall we had a great time, the service was outstanding, the architecture of hotel was so fascinating and beautiful.
