“Great Location and Value”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

Aug 18, 2008

We ( myself, my husand and 2 kids) stayed here and found the hotel great. The location is right in the heart of downtown with plenty of restaurants and shops within a minutes walk. The room was very large and airconditioned, beds were very comfortable and everything spotlessly clean. Breakfast is on the rooftop dining area which gives great views of San Diego. The Zoo is approx 10 mins drive and the port area another 5 mins drive away.
I read comments from other travellers about homeless people around the area and yes there are some but they dont bother anyone and were not in the immediate area of the hotel street. There is a bar accross the street which we thought might prove noisy but we heard nothing!
I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good base to explore San Diego.

“Great Place to Stay If You Like Downtown Convenience”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

New Smyrna Beach, FL

Stayed here a week through an RCI exchange and this place rocks! We're older retired couple in our 60's and it was a bit noisy some nights but soon got used to it. The suite was grand with a large sitting room, ample bedroom with queen bed, great views of the city (we were on the eighth floor) and complementary breakfast on the roof. The downtown location negates need for a car as buses and trolleys are always available. Senior rate on either is $1 for one way trip. Trolleys go to Old Town, Little Italy and Tijuana (need passport) while buses can take you to Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo (#7) the Coronado Ferry (#2) or directly to Coronado (#901). Bus #30 services the Birch Aquarium and La Jolla village. PETCO park is within walking distance. We had a great time at a nightclub called Shout with dualing piano players on 4th St and Patricks II around the corner from Croces. Horton Plaza with Macys, Nordstroms and many other shops is one block away. A Ralphs supermarket is also close by as well as several other smaller markets. If you want to rent a car for a day or two the trolley (Blue Line) will take you directly to many car rental places at the Middletown stop.

“Great location, noisy outside on weekends”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

3 of 5 stars
Boston, Massachusetts
Apr 25, 2008

I was in town for a meeting and stayed at Gaslamp Plaza Suites for 5 nights. The hotel is neat--I actually liked the frosted glass hallways. My room was a good size and the bathroom was art-deco-ey. The hotel is in a great spot for enjoying the Gas Lamp district and close to the bus stop to get out to Balboa Park and the Zoo. The rooftop deck was nice, and there was breakfast up there (nothing to brag about). My issues with the hotel were the just average quality of the linens (for $279/nt I expect nicer sheets and towels)--not a lot better than a motel 6 in that department. The soaps and such were also pretty cheap (again for the price I paid, I expected more). I had a room on the 8th floor that faced the bars and on Sat. night in particular, it was loud, but I turned on the a/c and that helped to drown out the noise. The rest of the nights the noise was reasonable.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Not your cookie cutter rooms so there was character and in the middle of the action
    • Disliked — Linens/toiletries weren't in line with the prices, loud on weekends

“Nice Location, Clean Rooms, but Noisy...”

Gaslamp Plaza Suites

4 of 5 stars
Campbell, California
Apr 1, 2008

We had two rooms booked for my mom, my kids and myself over spring break. The suites were good size and clean, although a little on the sad side. Some renovation would make this hotel brilliant! My mom's room was on the quiet side of the building, but window facing another building and constant noise from a fan. Our two room suite had windows all around which made it really bright and nice. The pull-out sofa was really uncomfortable, probably very old. The main problem was the noise we got in the evening from the nearby tavern. Every night past midnight. So, if you are planning to have an early night - bring your ear plugs! The service was great and staff really friendly. The valet was courteous and fast, although 24 dollars/24 hours sounded like too much. Overall, would stay again, if no kids at all and plan to visit local restaurants and bars, which are numerous.

“Lock up your valuables!!!”

I have just returned from a week at the Gaslamp Plaza and felt I needed to share this information with others who may be considering this location.
It is in a great location, however if you are not a sound sleeper, it is very loud at night. Because of the downtown location, there are people wandering throughout the hotel and there is no security to prevent someone from entering. From 11 pm - 7 am the doors are locked, but any other time, anyone can enter.
We had items stolen from our room while we were out for supper one evening. So make sure you take your valuables with you!!!! Then the most disappointing part about this is that the hotel would take no responsibilty for it. I had spoke to another couple who had items stolen from their room the previous week.
The items can be replaced, but it was a terrible feeling to know someone had entered our room.
This hotel is also very old and the rooms are very small.
