My husband and I checked in here as a short stopover between our flight from the Big Island and international flight home. We'd stayed at another hotel in Waikiki earlier in our trip, but they were full up on the night in question so we figured that as it was only going to be one night this place would be fine.
Boy, were we wrong!
From the moment we arrived in their dank and musty foyer, we were made to feel like we were imposing on the surly staff. After waiting for fifteen minutes whilst the reception people chatted amongst themselves, we were given keys to a room on a smoking floor (requested non-smoking). We lined up for those "scary" elevators that other reviewers have pointed up, and eventually (after much creaking and groaning from the lifts, and a trip down a dark, dirty hallway) arrived at our ninth floor hotel room.
We opened the door and initially thought there must've been some mistake. Had the room been cleaned? A call to reception suggested that it had. The bathroom had multitudes of hair left through it and the toilet roll hadn't been changed from the previous resident (whether the toilet itself had been cleaned was also rather questionable). There was mould growing around the sink and tiles in the shower recess. The airconditioning not working properly was the icing on the cake - when we realised the greasy windows didn't open enough to get some air in the smelly room that was the cherry on top. There's a difference between an "old" hotel that could do with a refurbish to freshen the place up, and a dirty hotel that's just been left to ruin. This place definitely fits into the latter category. I'd go into more detail, but the photos speak for themselves.
Realising that spending any considerable amount of time in the hotel room was probably going to result in mental instability, we went for a wander. The bar in the hotel is kind of like a smoky, flourescent-lit fishtank. We stepped inside, the skimpily-dressed barmaid swore about Valentines Day to some of the old men propping up the bar, and we stepped out. The pool area is unwelcoming cement with some deck chairs which look like they were picked up from a second-hand liquidation sale. Sighing, we braved the lifts again and left the hotel to go out to dinner and try and forget about having to sleep in the place.
When we returned to the hotel to get a couple of hours rest before our (thankfully!) early flight, we discovered old stains on the bed sheets. We tried not to touch anything and tried to sleep despite the aircon problem and smell. When we checked out the next morning, we told the staff about the problems with the room - the man on reception shrugged and didn't respond otherwise.
We've stayed in accommodation ranging from budget dives through to five star luxury, and overall this would be one of the worst "value" places yet. Obviously Waikiki is a tourist trap, but (as we found out on our return) there is still some basic but decent accommodation to be found in the area. This place isn't one of them though.
