My friend and I overnighted at EJH for a quick shopping trip in San Juan. On check-in we were disappointed to learn that a few features listed on their website were no longer in operation, however the hotel gave us an upgrade to an Ocean Lanais Suite in exchange.
The suite was really nice with comfortable beds and a very well stocked mini-bar. The bathroom was also nice with separate shower and toilet areas and a spa tub, however some refinishing would be very welcome. The balcony had an ocean view but could have done with a good cleaning (it did rain when we got there though).
For the original cost of the room, I expected more, maybe a flat screen TV and better lighting, though there was an iHome dock for our iPods.
There is a small shopping arcade, the Galleria, inside the hotel which is worth a visit. It contains a StarBucks, a really nice shoe store, convenience store, a Godiva store, jewelry and Ray Ban stores.
As we checked in very late, by the time we got to the restaurants at 10:30pm they had all stopped serving except for The Palm. The atmosphere was nice, the food okay but the staff were exceptional. Ask for Ana, she's a wealth of information.

Although we only stayed one night the ammenities of this location were more than expected. we spent an hour or so in the casino and by 12:30 there was no real crowd to speak of in the lobby. Rather quiet given some of the reviews.

Room was totally upgraded and very spacious.Breakfast by the pool was enjoyable as was dinner on the 10th floor

Found a great deal on the hotel web site VIP plan. I was charged 633 for three nights with 225 back in casino chips (1 play chips). When I checked in I asked for a ocean view room and was given the upgrade.Try to check in with Frances she really bends over backwards to make you happy. The food is very pricey so eat somewere else.Ruth Criss steak house (next store)had a great deal 2 dinners 90.00 w/salad and sides.Pool, bars are all very nice. Had a great time.Live band every night.

“Nice Place!!!”

I had a nice stay at this hotel. The pool grounds were beautiful. The room in the tower was eye-catching and very modern. The bed was VERY comfy! I was on the 8th floor with a partial ocean view. There was some noise from partiers in the corridors on the weekend but it was nothing intolerable. There were plenty of chairs available at the pool and beach. The concierge supervisor, Tania, was very sweet. She sent a special plate of chocolate dipped strawberries to my room for my wedding anniversary. We had a fantastic anniversary dinner at Koco, where we were treated like royalty. The food and atmosphere here were amazing. We also enjoyed the BBQ restaurant on the 10th floor. We traveled with our six year old and the hotel felt child-friendly enough. There were people of all ages here. The lobby dress code is not an issue if you are just passing through. You can get out to the street or out to the pool without being formally dressed. It's only if you choose to stay in the lobby or dine in the restaurants then you need to be dressed up. We went swimming in the pools at night and it was great. I got a few small bug bites at night by the pool but did not notice any bugs on the beach or in the rooms. The drinks at the pool were not THAT expensive. It was $10 for a daquiri, which is what I would pay at a bar in my home town. There were plenty of fast food and casual restaurants to walk to if you didn't want resort food. There was also pizza in hotel for about $15. Overall this was a nice vacation! Thank you, Tania!

“Great Stay”

El San Juan Hotel & Casino

Stayed at the El San Juan hotel for 4 nights. The trip to the hotel is $22 by taxi and takes 5-10 minutes.

Hotel:
The hotel is very close to the airport but you do not see planes taking off and landing. Had a regular room, which was fine. The bathroom is very small and there are no balconies. Most of the rooms are not on the beach; you could see the ocean from our room if you looked to the left. There is a 24-hour supermarket down the street that has everything you need. The Supermarket is in a plaza that has a bank, a curves and a pharmacy. The supermarket sells all kinds of liquor, beer, and wine. We bought liquor and carried it into our room. The casino is small and deals blackjack abnormally, which gives them an additional edge. We went to the Ritz and played in their casino, its much larger, has more games, you can walk there or take a short cab ride. At night the hotel has live entertainment in the lobby. The drinks at the hotel are very expensive, $8 beers, $10 rum and cokes, $12 pool drinks, etc.

Food:
We had breakfast at Starbucks, which is in the lobby. For lunch we found a Mexican/Spanish restaurant next door to the hotel that is owned by Ed Figueroa (first PRican to win 20 games in the major leagues, played for the 78 Yankees) and had great lunches there. For dinner we ate at The Palms in the hotel that was great as usual. We ate at a place called Risces in Old San Juan that was great (15 min cab ride) and a place down the street next to Burger King and across from the Intercontinental called Mi Casa (that may not be the whole name but its Mi something, has a white sign). Everything we ate was excellent. We also went to the rooftop bar/restaurant at the El San Juan called Brother Jimmy's, they had great bar food (wings, quasadillas, etc).

Pool:
The pool is really nice; there are 2 main pools with plenty of seats. There is a swim up bar that opens around 11. The beach is nice also; it’s public so you can bring your own alcohol.

Weather:
The weather was perfect for 3 out of 4 days. One of the days it rained on and off for much of the day, the other days were sunny and very hot. There was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake when we were there, the hotel shook, but everyone was ok.

Overall:
The only thing I can think of that I didn’t like was the smoking rules; you can’t smoke anywhere except the beach or outside the front door. No smoking at the pool, in your room or the casino. This is a positive for most but if you like to smoke a cigar its somewhat of an inconvenience. Everyone we spoke to was from NY/NJ or Boston so it was a good crowd (besides the Red Sox fans). The next time I go to PR I will stay at the El San Juan Hotel because its convenient, and the food is great.
