If you've never been to Sitges, Spain, be prepared to be blinded (or at least awed) by its white-sand beaches, and transparent waters. Only 25 miles from the city of Barcelona, it is an easy trek to Sitges' coastal beauty. During the months of June, July, and August, Sitges tends to be very crowded, so any plans to travel there during these months - accomodations, car rentals, etc. - should be made well in advance.

Sitges does have a reputation for being more expensive than other destinations in the area, however. It is also known for its friendliness toward homosexuals and for its gay and nude beaches. Families traveling with children may, for these reasons, wish to ascertain the location of Sitges' more conservative beaches.

The city of Sitges is also famous for its Carnival (Carnestoltes), which it celebrates in February and March annually. Though a vestige of early Roman Catholic influences, and held according to its liturgical calendar, the carnival festivities bear little resemblance to anything religious.

Port Aventurra, one of Europe's premier theme parks, is located close by in Salou, and is a popular destination of families. The city's Spanish architecture is intriguing. The Charles Deering Museum houses an extensive art collection, originally owned by Deering, and now open to visitors.
