1) Car: getting to Verona by car is quite easy. Two different freeways (Autostrade – which are not free, by the way, but you have to pay in order to use them) cross exactly in Verona. The Autostrada going from north to south (A22 – Brennero - Modena) and the one going from east to west (A4 Milan – Venice). This means you can easily reach Verona from every direction and from different airports. States roads from Trento, Brescia, Mantova and Vicenza also reach Verona, but travelling on state roads is more difficult because of traffic, speed limits, traffic lights…) (speed limit is 90 or 70 km/h on state roads and 130 km/h on freeways – Autostrade). From the Autostrada you can exit at Verona Sud, Verona E st or Verona Nord. All these exits are in the suburbs of Verona and you’ll have to drive a few km to get to the centre. Driving and parking in the centre of Verona can be a real pain in the neck. You don’t need a car to move around Verona as everything you have to see can be easily reached with a short walk. A car is very useful if you decide to go to the suburbs (but there is nothing to see there) or if you want to visit the lake (or the countryside near Verona - like Valpolicella). There are buses and trains going to the lake or the “provincia” but the service is not always great and it is hard to move from one place to the other relying only on slow public buses. If you decide to drive in Verona please be aware of street signs especially when you have to park. Unlikely other Italian cities in Verona they do give tickets if you park in the wrong place and they also tow your car away in certain cases. So if you see blue lines you generally have to pay on working days (from Mon to Sat) (from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.) There are tobacconists and newsagents where you can buy the parking tickets called Verona park. You generally cannot park for more then 2 hours in a row. These are the general rules but please always read the street sign. Never park your car where you see yellow lines or your car will be towed away and never park in front of a gate or private garage. If you see white lines or no lines you can generally park for free but there might be time restrictions so, again, check the signs. If you can only park for one hour and you don’t have the time meter in your car put a piece of paper inside your car, in a visible place, with your arrival time. There are certain zones of the centre where only authorised cars can enter and park. Be careful because there are cameras ready 24h a day to take pictures of your car and registration number.
2) Train: the main train station is Verona Porta Nuova. There are other two small train stations: Verona Porta Vescovo and Verona Parona. Do not use these stations as they are far from the centre. If you try to buy tickets on line from the Trenitalia website they will also list another train station which is Verona/Villafranca. Villafranca is 20 minutes by car from Verona so don’t get off here. At Verona Porta Nuova there are many trains to and from the main Italian and European cities. Public buses and taxis stop outside the main entrance. You can also walk to the centre of Verona but it not exactly a short walk. It also depends where your hotel is located.
3) Plane: Verona Airport is small but very busy especially in summertime. Many airlines fly to Verona: British Airways from London Gatwick, Air France from Paris, Lufthansa from Munich and Frankfurt, Alitalia from Rome, AirOne and Meridiana from many other Italian cities and regions, Airdolomiti connects Verona with Spain, Austria and other European countries. Many charter companies fly from Verona to different destinations. From the airport you can easily reach Verona in 20-25 minutes by taxi, bus or rented car. There is a bus departing every 20 minutes and taking you to the train station of Verona. Many hotels arrange transportation from and to the airport.
4) Plane: Brescia Airport.
