Onward Travel

Getting from plane to train is incredibly simple - the railway station is inside the arrivals hall; purchase your tickets from the machine on ground level (it takes credit and some debit cards as well as cash), go down the moving walkway or lift, and you're ready to go.

As of October 2006, the journey to Amsterdam Central cost about six Euros first class, and takes somewhere around fifteen minutes; there seem to be fast trains every ten minutes or so at peak time.

In July 2008, the Dutch national railways (NS) and the public transport company of Amsterdam (GVB) started to sell a new ticket at the airport Schiphol. The Amsterdam All in one ticket is specially developed for people visiting Amsterdam and arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.  This ticket consists of a return trip from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam together with a 24-, 48-, 72- or 96 hours ticket for unlimited travel on the GVB network in Amsterdam. Prices for the  Amsterdam All in one tickets are for the 24 hours € 12.95 48 hours € 17.00, 72 hours € 19.70 and for the 96 hours € 22.40. The Ticket is only sold at the Airport at the Holland Tourist Information desk. for more info on the ticket visit this link: Amsterdam All in 1 Travel Ticket

Schiphol Airside

It's worth noting that going airside at Schiphol is a slightly different experience from other airports - you pass through a security ID checkpoint and come to airside shopping before you go through your main security clearance. If you're flying to America, you'll find that you can shop, but your purchases have to be delivered to you at the gate - you won't be able to take your amusing clog-shaped chocolates or perfume through security yourself, but this could be an advantage: less to carry.

Airside there's mostly tourist-item and usual airport shopping, a couple of bars, a bookshop selling English-language books; a McDonalds with a small wifi work area; an ocean-themed bar and a few other small places to eat. You have access to small trolleys to push your hand-baggage about the terminal, which is a really nice touch.

Luggage storage

There is a convenient luggage storage facility at Schiphol Airport.  Located on the lower level between the major arrival halls  are lockers in various sizes.  Locker sizes range from small (for carry-on bags) to very large (for pullman size bags). You can store 4 pilot style wheeled bags in one medium size locker.  The first minimum hours are paid in advance but your luggage can remain for additional days and be paid for with credit card at the locker.  There are convenient tables for repacking if necessary.  There is also a money exchange booth.  The area is accessible by elevator or stairs from the ground floor.  A good option if you have a layover and would like to make a luggage-free journey into the city or are taking an overnight stay but don’t need all your gear or the hassle of hauling excess bags for a short stay.
