Malta has its fair share of nice beaches- you just have to look a little harder.
Ask a local for directions, or hop into a cab and try:
Paradise Bay (small, but quite pretty)
Hola Beach, Marfa (unique small beach with a palm trees setting and offers beds with mattresses and pillows)
Golden Bay (off the beaten track)
Mellieha (large, busy, plenty of facilities)
Ramla Bay in Gozo is sandy and well managed but rocky below the tideline.
