Surprisingly, even with the beauty of the area that Foz do Iguacu encompasses the city was not very populated until the mid 1900s. Today it is the 5th largest city in the Panara state of Brazil with a population of about 270,000. The city borders Paraguay and Argentina and therefore has a lot of influence from those countries as well and a good mix of Spanish speakers coming into the city at all times. Aside from this diversity however, it has much more still including a lot of African, Arab, Chinese, and many more immigrants. The city is multi-racial and very multi-cultural. Dominant groups of immigrants include the Chinese and Arab, some of the largest groups of these nationalities in Brazil.
With all of these cultures melding into that of Brazil, religion is diverse as well. The main religion is Catholic but Muslim and Buddhism are also very prevalent; therefore it is not just churches you will find but also mosques and Buddhist temples.
Getting back to Brazilian culture, in general one can say it is a festive and open culture. The weather of the city keeps people outdoors and active. Education is fair in the city and many people do go on to universities as there are several in the city.
