There are many beaches at and near Tamarindo, but if you are want to take a mini-jaunt in search of a less touristy beach, check out Playa Avellanas which has less strong of a current than the beach right in Tamarindo. Its protected reef also makes for amazing snorkeling opportunities.
To the north of Tamarindo and easily reached by bus or rental car is Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja. This national park gives tourists a firsthand look at the ecosystem of this region. But aside from that, the park is home to gogeous waterfalls, hot springs, and even a volcano! The park is an all-day excursion and great place to picnic or horseback ride. The other national park in this region is the Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas which is a safehaven for leatherback turtles. The turtles are only here seasonally, between the months of October through February.
Ask locals as to the prescence of rodeos near Tamarindo that may be taking place during your stay. Rodeos are a great way to check out the local culture and have lively entertainment.
While in this region, a chance to explore the jungle is a superb opportunity. Tamarindo Estuary covers about 1200 acres of a saltwater jungle in which to kayak through for a chance to see local fish, birds, iguanas, and even crocodiles.
